Generating vCenter Server & Platform Services…

A really useful capability that vCenter Server used to provide was a feature called vCenter Maps. I say “used to” because this feature was only available when using the vSphere C# Client and was not available in the vSphere Web Client. vCenter Maps provided a visual representation of your vCenter Server inventory along with the different relationships between your Virtual Machines, Hosts, Networks and Datastores. There were a variety of use cases for this feature but it was especially useful when it came to troubleshooting storage or networking connectivity. An administrator could quickly identify if they had an ESXi host that was not connected to the right datastore for example with just a few clicks.

VMware Flings: App Volumes Backup Utility

In December 2014, VMware released VMware App Volumes, a portfolio of integrated application and user management solutions for VMware Horizon, Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, and RDSH virtual environments. These solutions take desktop and application environments to the next level by providing radically faster application delivery, unified application and user management, while reducing IT costs by up to 70% according to VMware.

Log Insight + Netflow = Awesome part 2

Log Insight + Netflow = Awesome part 2

Log Insight + Netflow = Awesome part 2

In my first blog post Log Insight + Netflow = Awesome I show cased that Log Insight could be used to ingest netflows and showed some graphics and talked about possible extensions the data found into other products such as vRealize Operations or NSX. I got some comments from people who wanted to learn more, but instead of me keep answering the same questions, I have posted what and how on to github. This marks the first github project that I have created. So even though this is not even half baked, not thought through and very much just for showcasing the possibilities with Log Insight, I have made it publicly available, so that every one can have a go at it. Hopefully in time this will become much more useful.

Which Blog is Your Favorite TOP vBlog 2016?

As in previous years, Eric Siebert with vSphere-land.com is organizing a TOP vBlog voting competition and my blog, ESX Virtualization blog, is participating. I try to do a bit of everything, but staying as accurate as possible. Readers can vote and determine which virtualization blog they prefer to read through the year. Some readers might prefer deep-dive, or how-to topics only where others want to read news or watch videos.

I’ve been working on some different things lately and wanted to share with you a tool I used to help verify data. Whilst I am not ready to reveal all that I am working on I have had the requirement to return the following information about a Virtual Machine – Name, IP Address, MAC Address, Attached Network, Power State, VMtools status, and the VMtools version.

VMware NSX 6.2 Beginners Guide – From Zero to…

VMware NSX is the SDDC technology of the future. What ESX was once for Servers, NSX is now for Networks. I highly encourage everyone to make yourselves familiar with this technology. NSX with all its features is quite complex, but the entry point is quite simple and requires only basic vSphere and networking skills. This beginners guide explains how to deploy NSX in your homelab even with limited physical ressources by downsizing NSX Manager and NSX Controller VMs. The guide starts at zero and quickly explains how to deploy NSX and connect your first Virtual Machine to a VXLAN based logical switch that is able to communicate to the physical world through an NSX Edge Gateway.
